Smart Building Connectivity Platform

A building's external appearance shapes our first impression. However, what often goes unnoticed are the invisible energy flows that keep the building alive. To optimize these energy flows, Stadtwerke München (SWM) introduced an innovative Building Energy Management System (BEMS) based on Revolution Pi in March 2024. This solution enables seamless integration of new hardware and ensures intelligent control of energy flows in buildings.

Challenge

Stadtwerke München faced the challenge of developing an efficient and scalable solution capable of integrating both existing and future technologies across various buildings. A crucial factor was selecting a powerful hardware platform that offers the necessary computing power and flexibility.

The goal was not only to optimize energy consumption but also to enable the integration of charging infrastructure and smart metering to increase transparency and control of energy flows.

Stadtwerke München (SWM) is one of Germany's largest municipal utility companies, providing services in energy, water, mobility, and telecommunications. They drive the energy transition through the expansion of renewable energies and sustainable solutions.

Solution

Stadtwerke München opted to develop a custom Building Energy Management System (BEMS) based on cloud-based Azure IoT technology. After thorough evaluation, RevPi Core was selected as the central control unit for managing energy flows in buildings.

Implementation

Equipped with a powerful quad-core processor, the RevPi Core provides the necessary computing power for complex data processing and control tasks. Numerous interfaces enable flexible integration of various devices and sensors. Thanks to its robust design, the RevPi Core is ideal for use in industrial environments and ensures high operational reliability.

Through intelligent control of energy flows, energy consumption can be reduced and efficiency increased. The capability for real-time monitoring and control significantly improves the transparency and accuracy of energy data. The platform is flexible and scalable, making it easy to expand. This strengthens the development of sustainable energy and promotes environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

Results & Outlook

Stadtwerke München is already using the BEMS platform for their M-Ladelösung and M-MessWert Plus products. Long-term, SWM plans to further develop the BEMS platform to incorporate heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, and other smart building technologies. With the successful implementation of this solution, SWM is making an important contribution to the use of renewable energies and shaping the future of mobility in Munich.
