Orchestrating Energy: The AMPERIX® EMS

Imagine a system that makes building energy management more efficient by intelligently controlling energy generators, consumers, and storage devices while being flexible and robust. This is exactly what Wendeware AG has achieved with their AMPERIX® energy management system – and at its core is Revolution Pi.

Challenge

Wendeware AG faced the challenge of finding robust and powerful hardware for their AMPERIX® energy management system in the commercial and industrial sector. This hardware needed to be capable of integrating and controlling a wide variety of energy components.

Requirements included at least two Ethernet inputs, an RS485 interface, USB ports, and modular expandability for different needs, particularly a high number of digital inputs and outputs. Additionally, the hardware needed to be reliable, scalable, and suitable for industrial applications.

Wendeware AG specializes in innovative energy management systems such as the AMPERIX® EMS. They offer comprehensive service ranging from initial analysis through commissioning and customer training to after-sales support, serving industry, trade, commerce, and private households.

 

Solution

Wendeware chose Revolution Pi in a customized white-label version as their hardware platform. The decision was based on several factors: the industrial quality with ISO9001 and UL certification, the modular design, powerful processor, and diverse interfaces convinced the company. 

Additionally, the company had already gathered extensive positive experience with Raspberry Pi based systems in the past.

Implementation

Equipped with a custom operating system and EMS software, the RevPi Connect is installed in the customer's meter cabinet. Here, it connects energy generators, consumers, and meters via network and serial bus. Data from connected devices is collected and processed in seconds. According to preset, sometimes complex strategies, controllable generators and consumers are provided with setpoints to optimize energy usage. Thanks to the system's high flexibility, it's possible to optimally combine devices from various manufacturers. Optionally, the digital I/O module, RevPi DIO, is used in many applications. 

Through the integration of Revolution Pi, Wendeware could ensure that self-generated energy is optimally used, electric vehicles are efficiently charged, and peak loads are reduced to save grid fees and avoid costly infrastructure expansions.
