Caution! Possible destruction of devices in case of reverse voltage!

Post by volker »

Actually all RevPi modules are protected against reverse voltage wiring: If you mix up 24 V and ground pins (1 and 2 of connector X4) it would not destroy the module. This is the case for each single module. But unfortunately on of our users has found a way around to kill his devices. He correctly connected the RevPi Core but mixed up the power supply pins of a DIO module. To make things worse the PiBridge connector was plugged in and he used a strong power supply which delivered several Amps of current even when shorted. The internal protection circuits were overstrained, electronic parts simply vaporized and the modules became a repair case.
Unfortunately we have not considered such faulty wiring in our actual hardware versions but we will protect future versions for such constallations. Up to then we kindly ask for your patience and understanding that certain constellations of miss-wiring might result in destruction of devices. Please follow these rules which are common to professionals:

Always double check your wiring before switching on the power supply. Use your ohmmeter to check if 24 V pins are connected to 24 V and ground pins are connected to ground. Better use a power supply with adequate current limitation or an appropriate fuse in the 24 V power cord to limit value and duration of short currents.
