RevPi base modules are supplied with a pre-installed Linux operating system that has been specially developed for industrial use. The operating system image is continuously being developed. All versions are available as operating system images at the download area.

The latest version is RevPi Bookworm.

Each operating system image is available as a default and lite version.

Default Image #

  • full range of functions

  • Linux GUI pre-installed

  • as of RevPi Bookworm (04/2025) only installable on devices with more than 4 GB eMMC memory

Lite Image #

  • compact version for more flexibility and user-defined installations

  • less storage space required

  • Linux GUI not pre-installed

64-Bit Image #

The 64-bit images are based on ARM64 architectures (arm64/aarch64).

  • As of RevPi Connect 4 and RevPi Bookworm (10/2024), Revolution Pi systems are delivered exclusively with 64-bit ARM architecture.

  • ARM64 is indispensable for modern applications, databases and containers.

  • Most modern software programs are optimized for 64-bit architectures.

  • Access to a much broader software ecosystem.

  • Long-term compatibility and security updates are guaranteed.

  • Docker Hub and other registries increasingly only offer ARM64 images for ARM-based containers.

  • Includes modern security functions such as pointer authentication and improved address space layout randomization (ASLR).

Unless you have special compatibility requirements, you should always choose the 64-bit image.

32-Bit Image #

The 32-bit images are based on ARMHF architectures (ARM Hard Float). ARMHF is essentially obsolete. Most distributions discontinue support for 32-bit ARM.

Only select ARMHF if:

  • your hardware does not support 64 bit (very old ARM devices).

  • you need a certain older application that only runs on 32 bit.

  • only very little memory is available (ARMHF requires slightly less eMMC memory).

As of RevPi Bookworm (10/2024) image variants for 32-bit will no longer be provided.
